Word of the day

Down at the bottom of the blog here, there is a widget (that's what they call them, I don't make this stuff up!) titled Word of the Day. For the next two weeks I am challenging myself to use the day's word in the blog post. And I have to use it correctly, and in context. So I can't just say, "Today's word is tedious" and consider that I have met the challenge. No, I'd have to work it into the blog post like this, "So, I had been weaving in ends on this sweater for about three hours and was finding it a bit tedious."  Now, tedious was yesterday's word. That was just an example of the appropriate way to use the word.

See if you can figure out today's word without looking at the widget (what a silly word, I hope it never makes word of the day).

This is the last week before Christmas - I know this is true because I have changed the calendar in the shop and it is showing December now. And the little box in the lower right hand side of my computer screen says it's the 19th. I am in the final planning stages of the menus for this coming weekend. Friday night, we are having tourtiere, potato bisque and apple betty. There will probably be an adult beverage or two served also. On Christmas morning, I can't decide between the "Christmas Morning Wife Saver" or French toast with vanilla ice cream and strawberries, or crepes with whipped cream and strawberries. The crepes were my boys' favourite for any special occasion. As I'm assuming our guests won't rise before 11 am, and breakfast will probably be served around 11:30 or so, I'm off the hook for lunch. For our Christmas feast, we are having the traditional turkey with stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, turnips (with bacon and cream, mmmm), some other kind of vegetable or two, maybe a salad and I'm thinking pumpkin bread pudding with some kind of decadent sauce. Since  Kris likes the Greek pasta salad I make, one of those will be prepared, as well as the Fradenburgh Traditional Mothball Salad. In order for this little treat to be somewhat healthy, I use yogurt in place of the whipped topping.

I have made a desultory attempt at creating  the shopping list so I can get into the grocery store, and get out with the minimum of fuss. I print off the recipes, highlight the ingredients I don't have so I can add them to this mythical shopping list, then use one or more of the pages to help explain how to do a knitting technique to a customer which they take home, highlighted ingredients included.  Then I print the recipe off again.

Only, I used this one to sketch out a cardigan design that has been bouncing around in my head for a few years to show Betty. I see this cardi knit in strong, clear colours - believe it or not, not pink! Colours like charcoal grey, black, chocolate brown, electric blue, bright emerald green, cherry red...those sorts of colours. I don't even see it in my alternate favourite lime green. I have finished the swatch, and have figured out the construction of the cardigan, the edgings that will be used. Now the maths begin - how many stitches, how much ease, how scoopy will the neckline be - those sorts of things. Plus I would like this to be knit with the minimum of finishing, meaning no seaming. I have a good idea of how it can be done, now I have to work it out. That's the part of designing I like the best. However, this little designing project is taking me away from the Christmas Plans. I have one day to buckle down and get the list done.

I'll let you know how the cardi pattern is doing tomorrow - we could eat frozen pizza and chicken wings this weekend. We've got lots of those in the freezer.
