Don't worry, be happy

Last night at the annual Christmas dinner of a group I belong to, the conversation was, to put it mildly, was spirited. The conversation at one time went to discussing how people answer "How are you?" The general consensus was that we don't really care how you are, we're just following that old formality of greeting.

There's nothing like a real downer, when you ask someone how they are, and then hear, "Lousy" or "Been better" or even the not so annoying "Not bad". Look people - you're alive! Have some fun! There are two sides to look at when it comes to life - the positive and the negative. Take a positive outlook and good things will generally follow. Negativity usually breeds negative outcomes.

Then the discussion moved over to posting on Facebook and Twitter. What the heck? Who cares if  you "need to do the the laundry". Do you have to tell the world? Get going, get off the computer and do your damned laundry. Really, do we need to know you're "hungry right now"? Get a sandwich. And quit whining.

About four years ago I had a major life shake up. Turns out it was just a case of Bells Palsy, but Mr Knits and I both thought I'd had a stroke. Fortunately most of the side effects of the Bells Palsy have dissipated, and one of the "benefits" of it is that the right side of my face doesn't wrinkle. So I really do have a "good side" for photos. Then two years ago, when I was having a pre op exam for some very minor foot surgery, it was discovered that sometime in the past while I had had a heart attack. Me - a heart attack. It's felt it was probably caused by many years of taking Vioxx as a pain reliever for arthritis. But, that news really shook me.

So, a whole new outlook was in order.  For me, there is no longer any stressing the small stuff. You can't change what is going to happen - case in point, losing the diamond from my ring. And be happy. If the situation you're in isn't good, do what you can to change it. Make new friends, new traditions, new rituals, get a new job. Get a new hobby. (I've got one for you - knitting ;-D )

But take that first step today, and when someone asks you how you are - tell them you're great. Because you are!

Hugs to each and every one of you! And in the words of Bobby WhatsHisName - Don't Worry Be Happy.
