Northbrook News

Not very much exciting happens up here. The crime rate is almost zero - the most common offense is drunk driving, followed by bar fights. But other crimes, like shootings & break and enters don't happen that often. As a result, there's not much going on.

Until this past Wednesday. "They" came and moved the mailboxes! Now, Mr Knits and I are quite pleased the boxes are gone. And I'm sure several of our customer's who were almost hit by speeding cars going to the mailboxes are pleased too. However....some of the locals are not.

It all started a few years ago when the neighbour called Canada Post and requested the boxes be moved from his property. The number of vehicles pulling in and driving on the wrong side of the road for a sort of drive through mail pick up was becoming quite a safety hazard. We didn't know he had done this. Then one day, about two years later, as I was just walking out of my store, I was almost hit by a crazy man who was driving on the wrong side of the road, then cut through our parking lot to get to the mail boxes. So, we called the post office and we asked for the boxes to be moved. This was just over a year ago.

the post boxes of doom
We hadn't had any updates from Canada Post about the boxes, and were pleasantly surprised when last Friday we got a notice in our box that the mailboxes were being relocated to the PetroCanada station just up the road. Mr Knits and I did the happy dance!

On Wednesday, the move began. Slowly, one box at a time was picked up and driven to its new home.

the boxes were located right next to our store
Then the fun began. You see, a lot people don't pick up their mail every day like we do.  Sometimes they don't pick it up every week...sometimes they come into town once a month to get supplies and their mail. These people wouldn't know about the change. All Wednesday afternoon, people were pulling up to get their mail, stopped for a second and then drove off. Their reactions to the missing boxes were priceless.

The next morning, I had just got back into my car (I had to pick up something from the store before heading out to Toronto) when two men pulled up, got out of their trucks, and were staring and pointing at the place where the boxes used to be. There is no notice posted as to where the boxes are located now, and these guys were flummoxed. You should have heard the language - no, perhaps you shouldn't have heard the language. They were mighty upset that the boxes were gone and no one told them where they were. There was a lot of hootin' and hollerin' about the government and how it's going to hell in a hand basket. (I want to name my next cat Helena Handbasket, by the way)  No one told them the boxes were going to move. How dare the government do this! Not wanting to be part of this little drama, (although I confess I had opened the passenger window of my car and sat there for a few minutes so I could hear what they were saying), I pulled out of our parking lot and headed off.

I can't wait until the cottagers return - we'll get to go through this all over again! What fun!

Great posts, Nancy. I wish you and Mr. Knits all my very best wishes. My wish is that this will be the year when I can honestly say, "yes, I know how to knit"
