Free Pattern Phursday - Part Deux

Number 2. I can't believe I followed through and here's number 2. It's almost a series!

This is an old pattern, but a much loved one. And these neckwarmers are selling at Anthopologie for over $30!

Jackie - a Bowtie scarf

in honour of my late, and much loved sister-in-law Jackie. She and I spent many hours complaining of the cold - one night when she and my brother Randy we visiting us at our boat, it was so cold we couldn't sleep. So Jackie and I spent the night together (get your minds out of the gutter right now!) in my car with the heater blasting. Going to auctions was one of our favourite pastimes, and trust me when I say auction barns are cold too. Chocolate brown was one of her favourite colours - she would have loved this little scarf and I dedicate it to her. Miss you!

Materials:           Heavy fingering weight yarn – Mazinaw Dyeworks merino works very well
tilli tomas Elsie 33% casein, 33% silk, 33% merino was used in the sample
                         4mm needles
2 Stitch holders or spare needles.
                         Tapestry needle and tape measure

Skills required:  knit, purl, increase, decrease

Gauge:              Not really important as long as you get close to 12 stitches and 24 rows in garter stitch to 2 inches

Notes:               I used a set of four double pointed needles for this scarf – two to knit the scarf and the other two used as stitch holders when making the slot. I prevented the stitches from falling off by placing point protectors on each end of the needle when used as a stitch holder. By doing this, I didn’t need to move the stitches back and forth onto working needles from the holders.

Abbreviations:

K             knit
P             purl
Kfb         knit into the front and back of the stitch, thus increasing a stitch
K2tog    knit two stitches together, thus decreasing one stitch

Method:
Cast on 3 stitches. Knit 1 row plain. Next row, kfb, knit to end of row – 4 stitches. Repeat this row another 24 times – 28 stitches on the needle. Knit plain without increasing for 24 rows (24 ridges from beginning of work on each side).

Begin making slot. Knit first stitch, place next stitch onto stitch holder, knit next stitch, place the following stitch onto the stitch holder. Repeat across the row - knitting one stitch and placing the next stitch on the stitch holder  – you will have 14 stitches in work and 14 stitches on the stitch holder. Work the 14 stitches on the needle in k1 p1 ribbing for 14 rows. Place these stitches on second  stitch holder and break the  yarn.   Move the stitches from the first stitch holder to a working needle. Join yarn to these 14 stitches  and work in k1 p1 ribbing for 14 rows. Proceed to join the front and back. Place the stitches from the second stitch holder onto a needle. Position the two needles by placing one in front of the other. Now knit the first stitch of the front needle, then knit the first stitch from the second needle.  Continue knitting a stitch from alternate needles until all 28 stitches are on one needle. Work in garter stitch until the scarf measures 12 inches from joining row of the slot.

Next row:  k2tog across row – 14 stitches remain. Work in k1 p1 ribbing for 13 rows. On next row, kfb in each  stitch.  There are now 28 stitches on needle. Work in garter stitch for 24 rows. Begin decreasing 1 stitch at the beginning of every row by knitting 2 together until there are 3 stitches remain. Bind off 3 stitches. Weave in all ends.

To wear the scarf – slide the end without the slot through the slot. That’s it! Have fun with the scarf -you can dress the scarf up by placing a broach or single earring on the ribbed portion of the slot.
