Free Pattern Phursday - Twelve

Today's post is late, sorry about that! The shop is being painted, I've been moving product around, and got the news that my designs are definitely a go for this publication cycle. I'm in a bit of a flap about that. I have until March 1st to knit them, but the yarn won't be here for another 10 days. That gives me 2 weeks to get them all done.

This little baby cardigan is a sweet little project to fit a brand new baby. This sample is knit in a washable wool, but a soft cotton would be great for a summer baby.

START AT NECKLINE:
1.  Cast on 56 sts on size 4 circular needle loosely.  Do NOT join the round; this cardigan will be worked flat.

ROUND YOKE:

With size 4 needles work round yoke shaping, increasing from top to bottom of yoke as follows.
Rows 1 to 5:  Work even on 56 sts.
Row 6: Inc 28 sts evenly across the row to total 84 sts.
        (* [P2, M1] 3 times, then [P1, M1] once * 6 times, then [P2, M1] 4 times.)
Rows 7 to 11:  Work even on 84 sts.
Row 12: Inc 28 sts evenly across the row to total 12 sts.
        (* [P3, M1] 3 times, then [P2, M1] once * 6 times, then [P3, M1] 4 times.)
Rows 13 to 17:  Work even on 112 sts.
Row 18: Inc 28 sts evenly across the row to total 140 sts.
        (* [P4, M1] 3 times, then [P3, M1] once * 6 times, then [P4, M1] 4 times.)
Rows 19 to 23:  Work even on 140 sts.
Row 24: Inc 28 sts evenly across the row to total 168 sts.
        (* [P5, M1] 3 times, then [P4, M1] once * 6 times, then [P5, M1] 4 times.)
Rows 25 to 30:  Work even on 168 sts.
Split the yoke into front, back and sleeve sections as follows.  Starting at beg of round, slip sts for each section to separate holders: 28 sts for left front, 31 sts for left sleeve, 50 sts for back, 31 sts for right sleeve, and 28 sts for right front.

BODY (ARMHOLE TO HEM):
With right side facing, using size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch, work sts from left front holder, cast on 4 sts for underarm, work sts from back holder, cast on 4 sts for second underarm and finally work sts from right front holder.  Total 114 sts for body.
Work even until piece measures 4.6 ins (32 rows) from armhole.

For hem, work 4 rows in garter stitch or pattern stitch of choice.  Cast off remaining sts loosely.

SLEEVE (ARMHOLE TO HEM):
With right side facing and size 4 needles, re-join yarn and work sts from right sleeve holder.  Cast on 4 sts for underarm.  Total 35 sts for sleeve.  Join the circle, taking care not to twist the sts.  Mark the sleeve 'seam' midway on the underarm.
Work even until sleeve measures 5.2 ins (37 rounds).
For hem, work 8 rows in garter stitch or pattern stitch of choice.  Cast off remaining sts loosely.
Work left sleeve in the same way.

FINISHING:
Graft or sew the sleeve and body sts together at the underarms.
Sew buttonhole band to cardigan front, being careful to align buttonholes when sewing on the buttons.
Block gently - you have to block it. The cardi pre-blocking looks like a lump of knitting. You gotta block it!
            Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

I use this pattern to teach lace for beginners. The nice bit about the construction of the cardi is there are NO SEAMS to sew up except at the underarms!

Enjoy!
