Musings in the morning

This morning, while I was on my way to let the dogs out, I noticed that the sofa was once again littered with my knitting paraphernalia. If one looks a pictures of knitters and crocheters at work, one doesn't see much out of place. No bits of yarn on the floor from weaving in ends, no patterns scattered on every flat surface within reach, no balls of yarn anywhere - just the knitter or crocheter, her project and the ball of yarn she is using. It certainly gives the appearance o knitting and crocheting being a tidy hobby. One that a person can pick up or put down and not leave any detritus in her wake. This is so not true! I call this misleading advertising!

Do you see any mess there? There are four knitters on that sofa! Crikey, we have a huge leather sectional at home, and Mr Knits can't even sit on it when I'm knitting. I have so much junk on it, there's no room for him! Emma squeezes in, but only after she knocks something off!

I do my best to contain my craft. I really do. I try to keep all the yarn in a zippered bag (those pesky little balls are always jumping out), I keep an empty tissue box handy to put my yarn ends in (but it's so much easier to let them fall to the floor and vacuum them up later), and I try to memorize my pattern so there aren't any papers flying around the room. But still, there are the scissors, measuring tape, extra knitting needles, the cable needles, reference books, tea mugs - all the things we need at our fingertips. These things take up space! Lots of it. Something like this!

Now that's a little more realistic, isn't it? (Just to be clear, that's not my stuff, but it is a good representation of what my coffee table can look like.)

Let's not mention the numerous knitting bags most of us have. You know the ones - all those bags that contain our unfinished projects we have cleverly hidden from sight, but we know they exist. They may be "hidden" in a closet (or behind the sofa as I like to do) or on a shelf in our craft room. I'm sure they breed! I can't have that many UFOs! Can I?

Just look at the picture above - this deceptive marketing has obviously been going on for a very long time. Knitters and crocheters should unite against this misleadingly deceptive advertising and demand the truth be portrayed in magazines and books. Then our friends and loved ones won't think we slobs (although we may be) and be just a little more tolerant of the mess we are making while we are creating.

Send me your photos of the mess you make while you knit - I'll publish them here. I can't wait to see them. Photos of your stash too. Send them to me at nancy at logcabinyarns dot com  - just change the at to @ and the dot to a . Got it? Now get busy and start sending in your photos. I have a sweater kit here that I will award to the best mess or stash. Contest ends April 30th. Tell all your knitter and crocheter friends. I'll take some photos today or tomorrow and start the fun.
