And the Rug is the Winner!

Friday I asked for some help in choosing my next project and the Flower Rug is the winner. I had been leaning that way, and last night took home a crochet hook and a ball of yarn to begin. After trying a few different crocheted flowers and not completely liking the results, I combined three patterns and came up with this

And I really, really like it. I can get six flowers from a 50 gram skein, and each flower takes about 10 minutes to complete. That in itself is way better than the 25 minutes it took to knit a flower!

Just in case you want to make a few flowers of your own, here is the pattern. If you want to make it bigger, you can by simply increasing the number of chains and adjusting the number of each style of petal. So, without further adieu, let's begin.

Nancy's Newest Obsession - the Crocheted Flower Rug

Using a 4.5mm crochet hook and worsted weight yarn, chain 19 stitches. Turn and DC into the 4th chain from the hook, *ch 1, DC* in next chain stitch. Repeat 13 more times. You should have 15 "holes". Not to worry if you have a few extra, it will only make the flower a bit fuller.

Now to begin making the petals -there are 3 sizes of petals beginning with the smallest ones which form the centre of the flower. You will repeat the small petal 4 times, the medium petal 5 times and the large 6 (or more) times. Got it?

Small petal: *chain 1, 4 HDC, chain 1, sc* into "hole" formed by the ch 1 in the previous row. Repeat 3 more times in the next three "holes"

Medium Petal: *chain1, 5DC, chain 1, sc) into "hole". Repeat 4 more times in the next 4 holes.

Large Petal: *chain 2, 5TC, chain 2, sc) into "hole". Repeat 5 more times in the next 5 holes.

The flower will curl up on itself, and might require a bit of coaxing to look more flower like. This is what the flower looks like before you gently persuade it into shape

it reminds of an inch worm when it's waiting to be "persuaded"
Before securing, but after the gentle persuasion
Using the yarn tails (and a tapestry needle), secure the flower together on the bottom. I arrange the flower in three layers - the small petals on top, the 5 medium petals in the middle and the 6 big ones on the bottom.

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
HDC - half double crochet
DC - double crochet
TC - treble crochet
SC - single crochet

This little flower is just a wee bit smaller than 3 inches in diameter which means I need approximately 16 of them per square foot of rug. Or 240 total.  So that means all I have to do is make 233 more of this little babies and then begin sewing them onto a chenille rug I am using for the base.

Thankfully this is a really portable project that requires so little attention while working it that I think it will be finished by the summer.
