New for 2010 - Sock of the Month Club

Out there in internet land, there are a kajillion sock of the month clubs where the excited knitter pays a large sum of money to get a ball of sock yarn and an original pattern each month. Some of these clubs run up to and over $300 per year. While, in most cases, you get a brand new sock pattern and a skein of hand dyed yarn, it's still a lot of money.

My thought for this "Sock Club" is to use up some of our sock yarn stash and make socks, scarves, fingerless gloves and more. This club does not cost you anything - and as a matter of fact will reward you for your efforts. Complete the month's project and either bring it in or send me a photo, your name will be entered into a draw for a $10 gift certificate from the shop.

The patterns we use will be available for free on the internet, or one of my original designs which I will email to you. I thought to get this thing going and seeing as it's so cold out (at least up here!) the first pattern is for a warm, knitted scarf named Gaia Shoulder Hug. This pattern makes excellent use of self striping sock yarn, uses 100 grams (but you could make it bigger with an additional skein) and is a good introduction to lace knitting. The supplies you need are a 32" 3.75mm (US 5) circular needle, 2 stitch markers and a tapestry needle. You can use any selfstriping yarn in your stash - or feel free to use up the odds and ends of sock yarn you might have. The sample is knitted in one of my favourite colourways of Noro - my baby surprise jacket is knit in this shade.

All I need from you is confirmation you are participating so I can send you email updates. There is no need to complete every month's project, but I will reward everyone who does knit all 12!

Have fun - I've already cast mine on!
