Speedy delivery!
Yesterday, Mr Knits and I received a parcel from Taiwan full of Taiwanese goodness. Dan (Mr Knits' son ) and Kiwi, Dan's girlfriend sent the parcel to us on August 13th (last Thursday), and we received it on Monday August 17th! Crikey - we can't even mail a letter to Toronto that fast! Taiwan is on the other side of the world and it takes less time than it takes to send a small packet of yarn to Winnipeg. And the princely cost of sending this box? Well, at first it looked like a lot of money - $717TWD - but that is only $23 Canadian.
Last year, we mailed a box to Dan in Taiwan and it cost almost $200 in postage and it took 9 weeks to get there. That was NINE WEEKS not 4 DAYS! Something is really wrong with our Canadian postal system. I have known for some time I can drive to Watertown NY and send a parcel for just over $2 (same parcel would cost me about $10 if I sent it from Northbrook ON) and it gets to the recipient in the same time or faster.
But back to the box of goodies....they sent us dried mangoes and guava fruit, dried bean curd in plum flavour, seaweed and milk crackers and two rolls of delicious pastille candies. The candies are fabulous and I'm not going to share them! One roll is mixed fruit and the other blackberry flavoured. They were my idea of the best candy ever - sweet, sour, and chewy. Mmm mmm. I loved them! I'm saving the other foods for the luncheon tomorrow so we can all sample them. Also inside the box were two keychains from Scotland where Kiwi and Dan visited last month, and 2 magnetic calendars - one had a photo of Kiwi on it. What a treat and wonderful surprise!
I'm looking forward to the luncheon tomorrow, and although the room isn't finished, the sink is functional, and the slatwall is down. Taking down the slatwall, we discovered an additional 8 electrical receptacles. Where I once had two outlets I now have ten! No more extension cords snaking across the room and out the door! That's the good news. The bad news is all three wall we exposed are covered in that horrid fruity wallpaper. At least the paper is hung the right way in the rest of the room. I think we are going to cover the paper with panel board. There are 4 to 5 layers of wall paper on all the walls, and I can't bear to think of stripping it all down. So, I priced some panelling today and I think I shall have it delivered on Friday or Saturday. So, maybe it will be up by next Thursday! Who knows?
The Big Brother Shawl is coming along well - only about 20 more ridges or 10 hours of knitting left, which coincides nicely with the remaining episodes of Big Brother. No camera at home tonight, so photos will come later.
Finally, I emailed Stephanie about the blog post concerning her - she emailed back, "That's hysterical!" So I guess it's okay to keep the post on my blog. (I can't believe it - I got an email from the Yarn Harlot herself! I am a total geek for being so excited.)
Take care everyone.
